Mini delights. They are the ordinary things that make you happy. But in the haste of juggling the daily demands of family, work, friends and your own needs, you are likely to miss out on these oh-so-simple things that can bring you joy. But that doesn’t have to be the case. Take a moment to discover where your mini delight is and how you can turn it in to a daily experience. Here are some places to start looking.
Get back to nature. It could be something as simple as a beautiful sunrise or spectacular sunset that is your mini delight. Set your alarm a few minutes early in the morning so that you can get up, brew your coffee or tea, and sit by a window to savor the moment. It’s a great way to set the mood for the rest of your day. Ending your day with a cup of tea or a fruit juice spritzer and a sunset is a bonus delight.
Treat with a sweet. Give your taste buds a treat a few times each day with something small and healthy, such as a bite size Quaker Mini Delight Rice Snack with chocolatey drizzle.
Just laugh. Not taking things so seriously can be a wonderful mini delight. Buy a book of jokes and read one aloud to yourself each day. If it makes you laugh, share it with others and give them a mini delight, too.
Make a date. Friendship is one of life’s main joys. Make a date with a friend or group of friends once a week to get together for coffee or go for a walk or run. If that’s too time consuming, set a time to call a friend and chat for a few minutes.
Break a sweat. What could be more delightful than exercising? Try and fit in a 20-minute workout three times a week and your body will delight in the endorphins and adrenaline pumping through it. A half-hour walk tells your brain to stop making melatonin, a sleep-inducing hormone, so you’ll be energized.
Tune out. If you have an MP3 player, find a comfortable and quiet place—a park bench, a place in your backyard, a cozy chair in the house—and play a few minutes of your favorite songs. If you’re driving, turn on the car stereo and put in your favorite CD. Don’t be afraid to sing along.
Dance away. Put on some fun music and get moving. Along with being a great aerobic workout, dancing contributes to good posture and body alignment and encourages gentle stretching.
Add color. Buy yourself a bouquet of colorful flowers and set them in a spot in the house that you walk by often. If you work in an office, buy a bouquet and vase for your desk.
Soak up the sun. Take a moment during the day, or as part of your lunch hour, to treat yourself to one of nature’s best sources for vitamin D.
When you learn to recognize and celebrate the ordinary moments in your life—whether it’s for a few seconds, a minute, an hour or more—you’ll discover that you’ll be happier and healthier.
