Learn how to set goals that lead to success
Smart Goals for the New Year

Note: please consult with your health care professional before starting a new exercise program.

When it comes to making resolutions, many of us set a goal that is unrealistic. Whether it be too much, too hard or too ambitious with a deadline, a unrealistic goal can sabotage your good intentions.

For this year's resolution, set yourself up for success by asking and answering these questions:

  • Why is this goal any different from those in the past?
  • Why will I be able to succeed this time?
  • What obstacles did I have before when setting a similar goal?
  • How will I overcome these obstacles should they come again?

For example, if losing weight is your goal, does that mean a specific number on the scale? Does it mean you want to get into a certain pair of jeans? Make your goal as specific and realistic as possible so that you can take practical steps to achieve it.

However, it's human nature to make excuses along the way to achieving your goal. We all do, particularly with diet and exercise goals. It's easy to say that you don't have time, you don't like it or you're too tired. But here are some ways to view those challenges differently.

You don't have time. Schedule your exercise and healthful eating as you would any necessarily, but fun activity. Think of it as an essential activity that is simply too important to miss. Plan time to go to shop and prepare healthful meals and snacks. It's when your pantry is bare that you actually make the poorest eating choices.

You don't like it. You must be doing the wrong thing. Exercise comes in all different packages. It does not have to be a gym workout. Go for a walk or a bike ride. Just move. You'll be pleasantly surprised at how good you can feel when you start exercising. The same goes for more healthful eating. If you're trying new foods and recipes, keep trying until you find the ones you like the best.

You're too tired. Remind yourself that you will have more energy, and sleep and feel better when you exercise and eat right. When all else fails, simply get out the door; after the first few minutes of a workout, your energy will pick up.

Make small steps each day towards a healthier lifestyle and before you know it, you will be a fitter you.
