Looking for instant motivation? Training with a partner can really get you moving in the right direction toward your goals. For example, you are less likely to hit the snooze button for that early morning workout if you know your training partner is waiting.

"Having someone to train with is invaluable," says Maureen Roben, a Team in Training running coach and a former marathon record holder. "People who have training partners enjoy their sport and stick with the hard training longer than those who do not have a buddy."

Some quick tips... If you're a runner or a cyclist, find a training partner at your own ability level, so that you can stick together throughout your run or ride. At the gym, find a partner with similar goals and interests, such as going through a specific weight routine or working out on cardio machines.
How do you find a training partner?

  • Contact organizers of running races, marathons, all-women triathlons or bike rides for training group information.
  • Check bulletin boards at your health club, or post a note in search of a partner.
  • Call your local running club or cycling shop about group runs or rides where you can meet people of like mind.

So buddy up. It's a lot more fun and rewarding to work out when you can share the experience with a kindred spirit.
